In this Substack article written for the Creative Grief Studio, I share my experiences and insights from my work with The Compassionate Corner. This is an 8-week grief and loss program I developed specifically for the local IDD community in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The program is supported by The Compassionate Care Hospice Society (2016) and Rocky Support Services Society.

Understanding Grief in the IDD Community

Grief is a complex emotion. It can feel overwhelming, especially for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). My journey has shown me that grief is not just a feeling; it is a process. Each person experiences it differently.

In our sessions, we focus on creating a safe space. This allows participants to express their feelings without fear of judgment. We encourage open dialogue. Sharing stories can be healing. It helps individuals feel less isolated in their grief.

The Role of Compassionate Care

Compassion is at the heart of our program. We aim to provide support that is both practical and empathetic. The Compassionate Care Hospice Society has been instrumental in this journey. Their guidance helps us understand the unique needs of the IDD community.

We emphasize the importance of connection. Building relationships is vital. It fosters a sense of belonging. Participants often find solace in knowing they are not alone. This shared experience can be comforting.

Activities That Foster Healing

Throughout the program, we incorporate various activities. These activities are designed to engage participants and encourage expression. For example, we use art therapy. Creating something tangible can be a powerful outlet for emotions.

Participants have the opportunity to express their feelings through creative means. This can include drawing, painting, or even crafting. Each activity is a step towards healing. It allows individuals to process their grief in a way that feels safe and meaningful.

The Importance of Community Support

Community support plays a crucial role in the grieving process. We encourage families and caregivers to be involved. Their presence can provide additional comfort. Together, we can create a network of support that extends beyond the program.

We also emphasize the importance of ongoing dialogue. Grief does not have a set timeline. It is essential to check in regularly. This helps individuals feel supported long after the program ends.

Moving Forward Together

As we continue to navigate grief, we must remember that healing is a journey. It takes time and patience. Each step forward is significant. We celebrate these small victories together.

I invite you to explore more about the work of the Creative Grief Studio. Here, you can find additional resources and support. Together, we can foster understanding and compassion within the IDD community.

In conclusion, grief is a universal experience. Yet, it is felt differently by each individual. By providing compassionate support and fostering community connections, we can help those in the IDD community navigate their grief.

Let us continue to support one another on this journey of healing.
